The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) for Medicare runs from October 15 through December 7. If you use Medicare, this a very important window of time for you.

During the AEP, you can make changes to your Medicare Advantage plan as well as your Medicare Part D drug plan.

Medicare Part D (Drug Plan) Changes

Every year, your Medicare drug plan can change. Whether it’s your drug list or your plan benefits that are changing, we recommend reviewing your plan options.

The biggest benefit of switching drug plans can be cost savings!

What you can do during AEP:
  • Drop your current drug plan
  • Enroll in a drug plan
  • Enroll in a drug plan

Medicare Advantage (Medicare Part C) Changes

Just like drug plans, Medicare Advantage (MA) plans can also change their benefits each year. Even if you love your plan right now, it’s important to see what changes the plan is making for next year.

Not changing plans could cost you a lot of money in out-of-pocket costs.

What you can do during AEP:
  • Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan
  • Switch from a Medicare Advantage plan back to Original Medicare
  • Switch from one MA plan to another
  • Switch from an MA plan without drug benefits to one that does (and vice versa)

Dos and Don’ts of AEP

Don’t blindly keep your current plan because you love it.

Remember: Medicare Part D plans and Medicare Advantage plans can change their benefits every year. You may not love your plan next year, so be sure to review it during AEP!

Don’t choose a plan just because it has the lowest monthly premium.

Drug plans and Medicare Advantage plans have other costs like deductibles, coinsurance, and copays. Don’t make the mistake of choosing a plan with the lowest monthly premium just to find out your deductible is through the roof! If you let our team review your options, you won’t fall victim to this common mistake.

Don’t choose a plan just because your friend, loved one, or neighbor loves it.

Plans are very personal, so just because your friend loves their drug plan doesn’t mean you’ll love it, too! When we do a drug plan review for you, we take into consideration the specific medications you’re on, which will determine your out-of-pocket costs for the year. Another factor is the pharmacy you go to. Unless you and your friend take the same medications and go to the same pharmacy, their plan may not be the plan for you.

Don’t put off a plan review… the deadline will be here before you know it!

The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) lasts from October 15-December 7. Don’t wait until the beginning of December to start reviewing plan options! This is the busiest time of year for all insurance agents, so be sure to schedule your plan review as soon as you can.

Do review your current health and drug plans.

Situations change – as do Medicare health and drug plans – so be sure to review your current gameplan. You only have a short window to make changes, so now is the time!

Do shop around for more competitive pricing.

Even if you love your plan, there may be an identical one out there that’s less expensive. You never know until you shop the market, and the market changes every year!

Do ask an experienced, licensed insurance agent for help.

Medicare’s Plan Finder tool is very difficult to use. That’s why we offer free health and drug plan reviews. Our advice is completely free, and there is no obligation to make changes.
